peas and bubble gum

I am rather disappointed that the teaser trailer I posted below seems to have been taken down by Disney. I have never upset Disney before, and I certainly don't want to start now.

As a way of making a mends, I'd like to take a few minutes to talk about another Disney gem that I recently rediscovered: The Adventures of Davy Crockett! The boy and I watch the original film the other night and I really thoroughly enjoyed it. It made me feel like playing Cowboys and Indians in the backyard like I used to with my brothers. And donning a coonskin cap like good ole' Mister Crockett!

However the boy wasn't so impressed...I guess it's one of those things you have to see when you're younger to really feel the true excitement. Also, there were a couple shots with Davy and a crocodile that are just hilariously bad! I totally didn't remember that part. They edited together nature documentary stock footage, with the Davy Crockett footage and it is so off, incongruous and campy it makes me love it even more! Plus, that song! Born on a mountain top in Tennessee....I could go on and on, but I will spare you all. But to top it all off: Davy himself, Mister Fess Parker, now is in the wine business and sure does make some tasty vintages! Grab a bottle and reminisce with the King of the Wild Frontier!

Ask Alice...

What do we think kids? Doesn't matter. I still want to see this film. And I really like Alice's dress (which is naturally what I notice first, I can't help it!)

departures

I have been a bad blogger, I know. I've been somewhat preoccupied with drama in my life, and the blog got pushed to the back burner. Not like anyone is checking everyday, not like anyone reads this, or cares, or wants to care...if you are still with me just comment "macaroni!" And if you get my reference you are a real rock star!

But I promise I have been thinking of things that I really want to blog about during my hiatus and I'm sure as soon as I get my footing I will go blogging bananas! However for now, I just have to say a few things about this great film the boy and I saw last week, Departures.

We've started a weekly thing where we are going to try to see movies every Tuesday, although we already missed yesterday. But last week the boy took me to the Music Box on Wilshire to see Departures directed by YOJIRO TAKITA. Fittingly I knew nothing about it and figured it was probably about travel.

When actually it's the Japanese film that nabbed the Academy Award for best foreign film last year and follows a young man through a strange, difficult and fascinating career change from concert cellist to working in "departures." He and his wife assume it's something to do with travel-- it's not.

I won't say more than that, as to not give things away, but I would definitely recommend this film for anyone who is feeling unsure in their career path, and for those who are quite certain. No matter what, I think this film succeeds in being compelling, beautiful and uplifting-- and that's what I like to get for $12.95 on a Tuesday!

{before preview}

This is the couch the boy and I acquired recently. As you can see it's a used model, and sort of a strange shape, but I think it's got a lot of potential. So I am embarking on a mission to reapolster this little couch myself and give it an all around make-over in cuteness. If all goes well it will be an adorable, sparkling and good as new!

headbands are nice

Ever since seeing Alice in Wonderland as a wee child, I have been a fan of the headband. Especially since it always seems to give me a pulled together, girlish look with very minimal effort, and I like minimal effort when it comes to my "look." I tend to wake up as late as I possibly can---leaving myself with very little time in the morning to primp and preen before heading off to work. This is why, my gentle readers, the headband suits me perfectly. Easy, fun and fast!

I know that headbands have had a surge of trendiness in recent years, what with Blair Waldorf's and Lauren Conrad's endorsement. But despite their popularity, I must say I am pleased with the sudden influx of styles and availability. It has allowed me to increase my collection to a somewhat ridiculous amount. At the moment, I am most fond of my Bekah headband, handmade by Etsy seller and blogger extraordinaire Taza & the Prince. It's so pretty and unlike most full-circle headbands, this one stays in place on my head regardless of my stick straight slippery hair!

I am also quite taken with the elegant and fresh stylings of Abigail Ricarte's Bambako designs. Visit her shop and take a gander...it may just be my next uncontrollable shopping splurge, but I believe that a good headband is always worth it!

{a place to think, to write, to be}

I would like to have a nice desk like this:

The boy and I are working to make our new apartment a delightful retreat from the world. Hopefully I will have some lovely before and after pics to share soon!

Get Out of Town

Hope you all had a lovely 4th of July! The boy and I were planning on escaping to one of our favorite destinations this weekend, but we had a difficult time choosing just one. Should we go to Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Paso Robles, the Grand Canyon? All would be fun and all could be rather pricey... So in the end the boy whisked me away for a romantic getaway in the city of--- Los Angeles!

He decided that there was plenty to do in and around town, and a myriad of things we had never done before here in LA that we should check out before running out of town and spending more money than we really can afford. And I must admit, despite all my pleading to escape this wasteland that we call home, staying here was actually really fun! And it made me stop and realize just what a diverse and interesting city we live in; I think I often don't give LA her due credit. From downtown to the coast, to the valleys and the suburbs, she really ain't too shabby!

We started in Downtown Los Angeles, where we enjoyed the photographs of Robert Frank's Americans collection on display at the MOCA. It was very fitting work to see on the 4th of July. Then we explored among the skyscrapers, had a drink or two at the rotating Bona Vista Lounge in the Westin Bonaventure Hotel (really gave us an amazing 360 degree view or all of Los Angeles.) And we ended up at the Los Angeles Music Center, which has always been one of my favorite places in town.

The following day we hiked in the Malibu Creek State Park (which sadly I heard they are closing due to a lack of funds) and spent the afternoon picnicking on the beach at Paradise Cove in Malibu. That's a beach I have always wanted to visit, but never have before. It's where they allegedly filmed the movie Gidget, which, for all it's corniness and dated style, I absolutely adore. All in all, a very good weekend get-away!

Etsy Splurge

I am not particularly proud of myself when I am overtaken by desire for a material good that I know I don't need. I like to think of myself as somewhat able to control these petty urges. I really am trying to be less materialistic and keep my priorities in order. Such as rather than buying clothes all extra funds need to go directly into buying instruments for the band that the boy and I will one day form (after he teaches me to play something other than the cowbell). Then we will become successful rock stars and get to travel the world.

Hmmm...this post is kind of all over the place. Suffice to say that I was unable to fight the urge to purchase this swimsuit when it was featured on Etsy earlier this week. Check out LA Drama Queen's shop; there are a myriad of awesome one of a kind bathing suits!

I hope it looks as flattering on me as it does on the model. Just had to share as I think these swimsuit designs are so cute and retro. I love the one-pieces! I'm hoping to get the chance to sport this suit at least a few times at the beach this summer. It will be just like a 1960's beach flick!

birthdays and burritos

The last time the boy and I went to El Coyote Restaurant in West Hollywood the valet brought us back our car with a brand new dent in our bumper. So we weren't too keen to dine there again. (The boy even made a bumper sticker about it.) But dine there we did last night for my brother's birthday.

This time we took a cab. Which was both good and bad. Good because we got to partake in birthday tequila shots and enjoy ourselves; bad because we had to work today feeling very very fragile. But it was still worth it!

Happy Birthday Matt!
