Bad Ballerina Series Part 1

The best of my pro-ballet dancing days are pretty much entirely behind me, but I still have a certain affinity and love for all things ballet-related. I still take class and like to sport a classic leo, tights and basic ballet skirt. I respect the art-form and I sport the ballerina image with as much style and grace as I can muster. Although sometimes, I feel like I have to shake it up and break free of my stuffy ballet background. I mean, I am not perfect, and I think every dancer/former dancer has a bad side. So I give you~

So for my first entry into ballerina bad-ass-ness, I am going to show how you can take a basic ballet wrap-sweater from the barre to the street with a little flair and imagination.

I love a soft wrap sweater when I am warming up before class, but what about after?

Here I have added just a few punk-ish embellishments to give this wrap sweater a bit of a rock-n-roll edge.  A few interesting badges (not too big mind you or you could risk loosing your mystique) and a row of basic safety pins and you are good to go.  Wear with your favorite jeans, t-shirt and heels.
Another take on this wrap sweater is to play up the very thing that makes it uncool.  That is to say, Embrace the "Granny Chic!"  Pair it with a vintage dress and add a few mix-matched unusual brooches.  If nothing else, you are creating an awesome conversation starter and staying on-top of a new fashion trend!  Plus, your ballet wrap sweater will keep you warm without lending any bulk to your outfit.

Wedding Anniversary!!!!

Two years ago today the boy and I were bound in holy wedlock.  This year has been a challenging one for us filled with lots of ups and downs.  But through it all, the boy is always there for me.  I feel so incredibly lucky to have met such a wonderful man.  He is my best friend, he is my confidant and he is the most wonderful person on earth.  I love him with all my heart and I feel so happy in knowing that he loves me too!  Happy Anniversary Baby!

LA Burger Quest : Part Uno

Hamburger Haven on Robertson and Santa Monica Blvd.

They have a sign out front claiming to be the best burgers in Los Angeles.  I ate one last weekend and it was delicious.  Tasted like good beef and the fries were damn near perfect!  Now I am eager to see how it measures up against other Burger joints in the City of Angels.  So grab some Ketchup and join me on my quest!

Black Swan

This looks amazing and disturbing and I am so going to see it when it comes out.  As a ballet dancer, there is a certain fascination that I have always had for Swan Lake and the Odette/Odeill dynamic.  One dancer gets to play two amazing parts, showcasing two different sides of a woman.  In all my professional years dancing I only ever played a swan in the corps de ballet, but did plenty of performances as the Swan Queen in my bedroom growing up!  (I got rave reviews by the way.  ;)

I've always had a kind of love/hate relationship with ballet.  Very white swan / black swan in a way.  So, on this note I should announce that I am going to be starting a new series on this here blog:

The Bad Ballerina Series

I will be sharing easy DIY's and crafty tips for all dancers, former dancers and people who just plain love ballet, but maybe aren't the most prim and proper of ballerinas.  Stay tuned!

Hollywood Swingers

With the Brits in town the boy and I embarked on a tour of hollywood, showing them all the history, all the sights and all the celeb homes we could find.

Can you guess who lives here?

And here?

Hollywood sign!  Hooray!
And we ended up at the historic oldest restaurant in Hollywood, Musso & Franks.  Manni, the bartender who had been working there 50 years, was very entertaining and showed us articles written about him and the restaurant.
It was a very nice and properly touristy day.  So much fun!

Fly me to the Moon

I don't think I have ever had a picture of myself that is quite as cool as this one.  If only this was my  view from our apartment.

"so much time and so little to do...wait, strike that reverse it."

Hi my lovelies.  I know I have been MIA lately, but I have been having too much fun with our visitors from across the pond.  One highlight of the weekend was seeing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery this past Saturday night.  It was a blast!  I forgot it was such a cute and funny film.  Gene Wilder is so awesome, and I loved all his quotes and words of wisdom he'd spout, my favorite being~

"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest man."   Absolutely!

4 Simple Goals (before 2011)

Like so many other bloggers, I am taking part in Elsie's 4 Simple Goals (before 2011) challenge.  My problem is that I set goals for myself that are inevitably too lofty and therefore don't get completed and therefore leave me feeling disappointed in myself.

This time it's gonna be different!  I am determined to accomplish all these goals and not let myself get carried away.  So here goes:

1.  Work on my Wedding Album.  Notice how I didn't write FINISH my wedding album?  Yeah, I am already improving, I can feel it!  The sad thing is, with adjusting to married life, and dealing with immigration, moving, new jobs, lack of jobs, etc.  I haven't found any time to devote to scrapbooking all my gorgeous wedding pictures.  So, I want to at least get it started and begin to find the time before the year is out.  With our two year anniversary fast approaching, this is an important one for me.

2.  Have one night a week where the boy and I both turn off our computers at 8pm, step away from the TV and read.  I think it's important to unplug and get back to a little good ole' fashion book reading!  This is what the boy and I spent most of our time doing when we met back in college.  I miss our snuggly reading sessions, so I am bringing 'em back!

3.  All clothing purchases from here on out need to be from a handmade seller or vintage.  This may be a tough one for me, but the thing is, I have plenty of clothes.  I have clothes for all occasions.  I don't need anything new, so any shopping from here on out to December will be at Etsy, or garage sales.  Hopefully this will encourage me to spend money more wisely and invest in clothes that are classic, not just cheap trendy and factor-made.

4.  Work on fiction projects.  Again, not finish, but I do want to work on some of the fiction writing that I started and haven't been inspired to continue pursuing.  I know I get too easily distracted and discouraged when things don't turn out just like I hoped, so here's an attempt to overcome those weaknesses and get back to writing my stories.

So that's it.  My list of goals.  Maybe they still aren't simple enough, but I feel energized to give it my best and complete all four before 2011!  Watch me do it!

Is it wrong that I kinda want a "ballet box" to keep my crafting supplies in?  If it is, I really don't care cause it's soooo cute!

I don't own emotion, I RENT!

Last Saturday night, the boy and I were fortunate enough to be invited by our good friends the Behrs to see RENT at the Hollywood Bowl.  It was so much fun!  I love the Hollywood Bowl and haven't been in so very long.  The Behrs had a box, so that meant killer seats and a delicious Patina dinner!
I wish I had taken more pictures, but sometimes I feel like a tourist when I am snapping cheesy photos all over the place.  But even without pics, trust it was a very good time....

I am not sure that the boy completely enjoyed the actual RENT part of the evening, but I sure did!  The production was directed by Doogie Howser, uh, I mean, Neil Patrick Harris, and I felt like he did an excellent job.  Staging a full-length rock opera in that space is no easy feat.  I was also surprised by the performances.  The cast was composed of plenty of broadway actors, but also featured some celeb wild cards, such as Wayne Brady, Nicole Sherzinger (of The Pussycat Dolls) and Vanessa Hudgens.

Truly everyone did a great job singing, but the Pussycat Doll stole the show.  Her portrayal of Maureen was unique, funny and man that girl has some voice!  Hudgens struggled with her role of Mimi, and perhaps wasn't ready to take on a part where she isn't a bubbly singing science star....She got better as the night went on, but I think I have done better renditions of "Take me Out Tonight" at Karaoke; and believe me, I cannot sing!  I wasn't surprised by this, but it really did take the whole production down a few pegs.  I know she is young, and she certainly is pretty and a talented singer, but I suspect, girlfriend needs to study up on her musical theater and characterization.

In the end though, being out, under the Hollywood night sky, having a night at the bowl is always a pleasure and the perfect place to spend a summer evening.  Thanks to the Behrs!
