New Year, New Shop

I have been struggling with this whole Etsy Shop thing for a while.  I keep changing my mind about what I want to sell and if I should change the user name to match my blog (which I couldn't because it's taken) and on and on.  The truth is, I don't think I have found the right footing with the overall theme of the shop and what I actually want to sell.  So, I have decided to try to move what products I have and start over with a new Etsy shop in the new year.
That said, I am doing a special promotion in my shop for all the remaining items.  Use the coupon code NEWSTART to get 20% off your entire purchase.

Happy shopping!

Christmas Art Journal: Post 2

For this page I used the prompt:

"I'm dreaming of a White Christmas."
I took this classic lyric and explored what I'd like my future home to look like around the holidays.  Something about a classically decorated house makes me feel warm and happy.  I can imagine all the happy family holiday moments that could take place inside.

Thanks to the pages of the most recent Pottery Barn, I'm able to have a visual to go along with the dream.  If you are making your own journal, try to find a magazine picture that represents a Christmas dream of your own.  Then write your dreams directly on the picture.

Christmas Craft

I think I mentioned before that I wanted to try my hand at making a yarn wreath for the holidays and I went ahead and took a crack at it....

Think it came out pretty good!  Of course now I have tons of extra yarn I need to use up.  Perhaps this would make a good gift for family and friends!

Christmas Art Journal: Post 1

For my first page of my holiday themed art journal I wrote down my winter wish.  Not something material--more like a "grown up Christmas list"--a wish for something more important than anything that can be bought.  Mine is for my family to all be together this year, happy and healthy.

What's your Christmas Wish this year?

Tutu Cute!

I just finished making a new collection of holiday tutus for little ones and I just had to share as I think they are TUTU cute!

Maybe it's because it's all the Nutcracker rehearsals, but I tried to make each tutu reflect a character from the beloved ballet.  I think my favorites are this one:
A Snowflake
And this one:
Sugar Plum Fairy
These are going be on sale at Brentwood Dance and Activewear, but if you want a special holiday tutu for your little one, email me and let me know!

Christmas Makeover

Hi there!  You may have noticed that there has been a certain change to the Lilac and Lace header and color scheme and all I can say is-- it's my favorite time of year and I am doing it up right!  So along with the design festivities, I am also beginning my Holiday Art Journal.

This will be a scrapbook/planner/journal in which I will document all the going-ons of this years' holiday season, as well as take moments to look back and write about holidays gone by.  If you want to make your own Holiday Art Journal with me, I will be posting my journaling prompts and sharing pages on this blog as we count down the days till Christmas!

Happy Holidays!  Here we go!

I am thankful for...

Family trips to Switzerland

Stories of Serendipity

Bowties

See's Caramel Chews

A collection of Owls like none other

An Office filled with clocks and a chinese rock garden

A room with walls that are filled with books

A cruise to Alaska for a 50th wedding anniversary

A collection of the classics

Postcards from every corner of the world

Christmases in Santa Fe

Lunches at Harbor House Grill and brunches at Jack's

All the happy and fun times I spent growing up visiting my grandparents in Laguna and all the memories I can take with me where ever I go....

This isn't everything I am thankful for, but it's a start.  My grandpa passed away yesterday.  He was a great man and I will miss him.  But he left behind such warm memories and a legacy of wonderful work and time tested stories that his presence will continue to live on and inspire.  He led an incredible life and he gave so much to me and my brothers.  He was classy, and he was wise.  He had this presence about him, a sort of mystique.  I always felt his wisdom and his knowledge permeating the room and yet, he was never overbearing or intimidating.  He was always warm and  encouraging to me.  I just had to take a moment and share this with you.  I know I am very lucky to have known him and for that I am incredibly grateful.

"Those were lean years, and for many Americans a harsh and bitter time. On Waltons Mountain we were sustained with poems and gingerbread and laughter and sharing, but most of all by a remarkable mother and father. The house in which we were born and raised is still there, still home, and on the winds that sigh along those misted blue ridged mountains our voices must echo still".    -John McGreevey

Thankful

I love holiday weeks!  Maybe it's the food, maybe it's the company...maybe it's the fact that I get two days off work!  Whatever the reason, I have a lot to look forward to and I also have a lot for which to be thankful.  One thing I am definitely thankful for is all my blog readers and supporters.  Really, I cannot express how much I enjoy reading your comments and sharing my thoughts, dreams and crafts with all of you.  So, I guess what I am trying to say is~
I am going to post my list of things I am grateful for later, but in the meantime here is a downloadable freebie for you.  Thanksgiving mailing labels!  Yay!  Click here to snag them, go to file and then download.

Christmas Wish List

The boy has insisted that I stop just talking about the holidays and go ahead and put together a wish list for him to give our family on the other side of the pond.  Now don't get me wrong, I love putting together wish lists, but as I look at the things I picked last night I am wondering if they are all a bit too strange and random.  But using the logic that I should pick things that I want, don't need, and wouldn't justify buying for myself, well, then this is some of what I came up with....

Kind of all over the place right?  Well, to help explain my way of thinking, I suppose I should tell you that I am aiming to have a strictly handmade holiday...well as much as I possibly can.  You see, I haven't been very good at sticking to my 4 Simple Goals, especially goal #3.  I have been buying clothes from Target, Athropologie, Forever 21, you name it.  Part of my failure in only buying vintage or hand-made clothes was the new job though.  I needed some sophisticated and grown up "office clothes," which I realized after the fact I didn't really own.  So I am cutting myself some slack in that respect.

But I think it would be nice this holiday season to support indie businesses and give and receive gifts that are unique and handmade or vintage.  Thus my list formed with a slightly eccentric bent.  But I am asking for some useful things (alla sewing machine) which will hopefully allow me to be more crafty in the future!  What's on your Christmas list?

Happy weekend...Almost

Hi Lovelies,

So the weekend is nearly here and I for one cannot wait.  I am working all day tomorrow, but even still, it will be nice to be out of the office and away from the daily grind.  While it was hard for me to get up and get going this morning, one thing that brightened my groggy mood was hearing non-stop Christmas music on one of the local radio stations here in L.A.  Kost 103.5 has already started their Holiday music marathon, and while I am a tad shocked that they have started the tinsel and tunes so early, I must admit that I'm happy about it.  Hearing Bruce Springsteen croon about how I "better be good for goodness sake," is hands down the best way to start a day...well, in my opinion.

So if Kost can do it, if the streets of Beverly Hills can do it, and if  every mall in America can do it, I'd say I have the right to start getting my Christmas on too!  Hopefully this weekend I can get a jump start on all things holly and jolly leaving me plenty to share with you next week!  Have yourself a merry little weekend!

xoxo,
Gidget

Black Swan

I was lucky enough to get to see an advanced screening of the new Darren Aranofsky film Black Swan this past weekend and it was quite an experience.  At first I felt like it didn't quite live up to my expectations.  It's not that much about ballet as it is a psychological thriller that just happens to be set in the ballet world.  And I left wanting to have gotten a better look at the ballet world and all the nutcases that inhabit it.  But like all of Aranofsky's films, Black Swan has stayed with me this week.  I cannot stop thinking about it.  It's pretty damn unusual and interesting.  And it's put Swan Lake into a whole new perspective for me.

All the actors are great, but Natalie Portman's performance is spot on perfection.  She becomes that character; and she doesn't overplay it all.  She's amazing.  The film also does a marvelous job of conveying the isolation, the need for perfection and the stress that comes with being a ballet dancer.  It's definitely a film to see, but don't expect to leave with the feeling to put on your pointe shoes and perform....it's not that kind of dance film!

That little review leads me to my real reason for posting, these posters!  I want one so bad!
They even match the decor in my living room!  Anyone of you Hollywood, movie industry types that think I am a peach of a girl, please hook me up!

Luscious Lips

I always want to wear lipsticks in bright and dramatic colors, but inevitably I mostly end up wearing chapstick and that's it.  I wish I was braver and had the guts to pull off some of these awesome looks~

Hello, I'm a McGreevey

There is so much about my family that I love.  There is so much about my parents and my grandparents' lives that I find fascinating and inspiring.  It's too much to go into...especially on the internet.  However, I just want to say to anyone and everyone that reads this blog how very blessed and lucky I feel to have grown up a McGreevey.
Younger Years
I come from a wonderful family of artists, thinkers and story-tellers, and while at times I feel intimidated by everything my elders have done before me, I mostly just feel motivated to carry on their legacy.  I feel really lucky to have been encouraged by my entire family to pursue my dreams.  They made it possible for me to dance, to study literature and to live a charmed life for which I know I am very fortunate.

At the moment, I'm thinking quite a lot about my Grandpa McGreevey.  When I was about 8 or 9, I was very into my ballet training.  It was the first time I remember clearly thinking that it was a passion I wanted to pursue professionally.  I also wanted to learn everything I possibly could about the art form--the technique, the history and of course, the music.  Classical music had only been something I heard occasionally in TV commercials or movies.  I knew the Nutcracker inside and out but beyond that I didn't have much knowledge of any composers or the great works they were known for composing.  I told my Dad that I wanted to get some classical music tapes, and he said he would talk to my Grandpa.
My Grandpa knows everything about opera and classical music and had an amazing collection of classical LPs, so he took it upon himself to make me a mixed tape of some of his favorites.  It was like a sampler of great composers and ballets all crammed into a 90min double sided tape.  I think I still have it and I will always keep it because, well, it changed my life.

That collection of music--with the likes of "The Firebird,"  "Romeo & Juliet,"  "Rodeo,"  "Petruschka," "Fancy Free" and the "West Side Story" prologue-- was a jumping off point for me.  I became enchanted with classical music and wanted to hear as much as I could.  I wanted to know who the composers were and who were the lucky choreographers who first shaped their music into movement.  I believe that tape started me on a path of knowledge and musical exploration that I am still on now.  I think it was also the first time I realized that classical music and ballets for that matter, don't have to be safe or boring, they can be exciting and daring!    It's a funny thing how something that could appear to be so trivial ended up having such a huge impact on me and my life choices.

Just wanted to share.

Hope you are having a good Wednesday!

Gidget

Daily Delights

Here are a few things that make my everyday life a bit brighter....it's the little things you know.

I love checking days off my desk calendar at work.  Isn't it funny that such a silly little thing can give me such a sense of accomplishment?
This collection of old Bon Apetit Magazines from the 1970's and 80's that my mom lent to me. It's so much fun to flip through the pages and see all the old adverstisments (and hairdos!)
The Christmas decorations already going up around town.  It's got me in the holiday spirit!
Gingerbread coffee from Trader Joes.  I don't think I need to explain this one.
What are some of your favorite Daily Delights?

cheers,
Gidget

like this and that

The weather is getting colder and I am sporting my wool dresses and coats like a proper winter fairy and Starbucks has started using the red cups.  I love this time of year!  The anticipation for Christmas (and my birthday, hint hint) is just divine!  Since all the retailers are already sporting their Christmas best, I figure I can at least start to plan my Christmas gifts, my winter wishes and my new Christmas Art Journal. (If anyone wants to do this with me I would love to be able to share the process with you.  Comment and let me know!)

With all that, I am itching to get started on some holiday arts and crafts.  First on the list is a Christmas Yarn Wreath. I would really like to try my hand and making one of these, they look so cute and kitchy.  Anyone know any good tutorials?

These are taken from Knock Knocking's Etsy shop.  I am obsessed!  The one with the little fox is just too cute!

Going to see this tonight!

Remembrance Day

Absolution by Siegfried Sassoon
The anguish of the earth absolves our eyes
Till beauty shines in all that we can see.
War is our scourge; yet war has made us wise,
And, fighting for our freedom, we are free.

Horror of wounds and anger at the foe,
And loss of things desired; all these must pass.
We are the happy legion, for we know
Time's but a golden wind that shakes the grass.

There was an hour when we were loth to part
From life we longed to share no less than others.
Now, having claimed this heritage of heart,
What need we more, my comrades and my brothers?

Fluff n' Stuff

Hello Lovelies,

I have been doing a lot of thinking in regards to my Etsy shop.  I haven't been that successful with it and I am considering scrapping the whole thing and selling my wares solely from the dance-wear store at which I have a consignment deal.  But of course, there are some things that aren't selling that well there either.  In any case, I am thinking of re-branding my shop on Etsy and adding the tutus that I have been selling at the dance store.

I also want to add a whole bunch of holiday items, but naturally haven't found the time.  In any case, I want to know what you think.  Any suggestions, thoughts or words of wisdom?

Here are some of the tutus I've made and am going to add to the shop later this week~

Also, as a passionate dancer and dance teacher, I have decided that for every item that I sell I am going to donate two dollars of the proceeds to the Dizzy Feet Foundation. This inspiring group helps underprivileged and at-risk youth find self-esteem, artistic expression and healthy life skills through the art of dance.  I am a big believer in the power of the arts, so I feel personally motivated to donate to their cause.

Rule Britannia!

Last week's Britannia Awards was amazing.  Sadly I wasn't really able to take many pictures, but here's just a small sampling of the evening.

Thanks for everyone's help with the outfit decision! ;)
